Artist's Comments

So I know this isn't the super amazing return of me that I'm sure you had in mind. But just wanted to prove I AM working.

Actually, I've been doing a lot of art and this Moleskine sketchbook is nearly full at this point but... I... don't have a scanner anymore. Mine has bit the dust. So I scan when I can borrow someone else's scanner which isn't too often. I hope to get a new scanner next month sometime-- but my funds are very short lately so who knows! It may need to wait until end of summer.

Anyways! Very heavily James Jean (www.jamesjean.com) inspired speedpainting. 2 hours, ink and gesso. (Obviously no thought as to placement on the paper as I cut off the poor wolf's nose.) James Jean has been strongly influencing my work lately, the man is amazing and I am going to take some time to study his techniques. I'm certain I can learn a lot from him. His work is very similar to where I'd like mine to be some day.

I don't know what you thought of when you were aiming for a "super amazing" come back, but this is pretty amazing to me-- especially for just a fun speed paint. I love the style and the creepy factor in it. I actually like how you cropped off parts of the wolf and didn't make it super realistic or cartoony. It's a big relief to see a different spin on a cliche subject.

I can't wait for more scans of your moleskin if the images follow along this sort of style.

I would have never thought to use gesso this way. O:

Gesso seriously makes the best opaque white paint out there. Goes on smooth, goes exactly where you want it to, and gives some tooth for the following layers of paint (so it creates some really awesome textures!). Try it out sometime! I'm completely addicted to the stuff now. :O

I'll have to dig mine up and do so someday. :O

Even though you only worked on this for a couple of hours, I'm really impressed with the amount of detail you were able to get! I like the way you splattered ink at the bottom too! It's really neat looking! :3

Man, this is an absolutely beautiful piece! I had no idea one could do stuff like this in a moleskin notebook, but you've quite inspired me to try art out in it. And yes, James Jean is a great artist; I love that guy's work as well.
